Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before booking your desert trip — from safety and packing tips to itinerary planning and pricing.
Yes — the Black and White Desert area around Bahariya Oasis is open to tourists and visited by thousands of travelers every year. Our licensed guides and private 4x4 vehicles ensure you travel safely and comfortably at all times.
The White Desert is approximately 370 km southwest of Cairo — about a 4–5 hour drive. We depart early morning, stop at Bahariya Oasis for lunch and the hot springs, then head into the desert by afternoon.
The Black Desert is covered with dark volcanic rock and powder from ancient eruptions — great for panoramic views from "English Mountain." The White Desert features surreal white chalk formations sculpted by wind over millions of years (including the famous Mushroom, Chicken, and Rabbit rocks). Most tours visit both in one trip.
Absolutely — and it's the highlight of the entire trip. We set up a Bedouin-style camp between the chalk formations, cook a traditional BBQ dinner under the stars, and you wake up to sunrise over an otherworldly white landscape. Sleeping bags, mats, and all camp equipment are provided.
October to April is ideal — days are warm and nights are cool and clear for stargazing. Winter nights can drop near 0°C, so warm layers are essential. Summer is possible but temperatures exceed 45°C during the day. Avoid full moon nights if you want the best Milky Way photography.
2 days / 1 night is the most popular option and covers both deserts with overnight camping. For a richer experience including Djara Cave, Crystal Mountain, and Bahariya Oasis exploration, we recommend 3 days. We customize the itinerary to fit your schedule.
Yes — the White Desert is a protected national park and requires entering with a licensed operator. Independent entry without a registered guide is not permitted. All Elzaghandi Travel tours are fully licensed, and we handle all permits so you don't need to worry about anything.
Not recommended. The White Desert is 370 km from Cairo — 4–5 hours each way. A day trip means 8–10 hours driving with barely 2 hours in the desert. The real magic is at sunset and sunrise when the chalk formations glow golden and pink — which requires an overnight stay.
The most iconic are the Mushroom Rock, Chicken Rock, and Rabbit Rock — sculpted by thousands of years of wind erosion. At full moon, the entire landscape glows white like snow. Our guides know exactly where to position your camp for the best sunrise colors over the formations.
Very limited to no signal inside the desert. Bahariya Oasis town has 4G, but once deep in the desert it disappears. Download offline maps before the trip. Honestly, this is one of the joys — a true digital detox under the Milky Way with zero distractions.
Yes — the White Desert is accessible for all ages. We travel in comfortable 4x4 vehicles and the terrain requires minimal walking. We've hosted guests from toddlers to 70-year-olds. Just mention any special needs when booking and we'll adapt the itinerary accordingly.
Yes — Siwa is widely considered one of the safest destinations in Egypt. It's a small, tight-knit Bedouin community with very low crime. Solo female travelers report feeling completely comfortable here. The local culture is welcoming and respectful of visitors.
We recommend a minimum of 2 nights and 3 days to explore Siwa comfortably — the Temple of the Oracle, Shali Fortress, salt lakes, and desert springs. If you want to go deeper into the Great Sand Sea and the surrounding desert, 4 days is ideal.
Top experiences include: swimming in Cleopatra's Spring, exploring the ancient Oracle Temple of Amun, sandboarding in the Great Sand Sea, watching sunset from Shali Fortress, star-gazing in the desert camp, and visiting the Siwa salt lakes for a natural spa experience.
Scorpions and snakes exist in the desert but encounters are extremely rare on guided tours. Our Bedouin guides know the terrain well and always select safe campsites. Standard desert practice: shake out your shoes before wearing them in the morning — that's all you need to know.
Yes! The Siwa salt lakes have extremely high salinity — floating is effortless, exactly like the Dead Sea. The mineral-rich mud on the lake beds acts as a natural skin treatment. Travelers love covering themselves in it for the full spa experience — and the photos are incredible.
Cleopatra's Spring (Ain Guba) is a natural freshwater pool carved into rock — legend says Cleopatra herself bathed here. Yes, you can swim in it. The water is cool, clear, and constantly fed by a natural underground spring. It's circular, about 6 meters across, and one of Siwa's most iconic landmarks.
In 331 BC, Alexander the Great made the arduous journey across the Sahara specifically to consult the Oracle of Amun at Siwa. The oracle reportedly confirmed him as the Son of Amun and rightful Pharaoh of Egypt. The ruins of this ancient temple are still visible today and open to visitors — one of the most historically charged sites in the entire country.
Shali is a 13th-century mud-brick fortress town built on a hill at the center of Siwa. Constructed from kershif (salt rock and mud), it housed the entire Siwan population for centuries. Heavily damaged by three days of rare heavy rain in 1926, it stands today as dramatic atmospheric ruins — best visited at sunset when the warm light turns the crumbling walls golden.
Siwa is approximately 750 km northwest of Cairo — about an 8–9 hour drive. We provide comfortable private 4x4 transport with stops along the way. You can also fly to Mersa Matruh and drive 3 hours south. We handle all logistics from pickup in Cairo to return — just pack your bags.
Fayoum is one of Egypt's most underrated destinations — just 1.5 hours from Cairo. It's famous for Wadi El Hitan (UNESCO World Heritage Site with 40-million-year-old whale fossils), the magical color-changing Magic Lake, Wadi El Rayan waterfalls (Egypt's only natural waterfall), and dramatic desert landscapes that feel a world away.
October to March is perfect. Mild weather makes hiking, birdwatching at Lake Qarun, and exploring the desert comfortable. Spring (March–April) is also beautiful with wildflowers. Summer is very hot but the Magic Lake's surreal colors are equally stunning year-round.
Wadi El Hitan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Fayoum desert containing hundreds of fossilized skeletons of ancient whales (Archaeoceti) — primitive mammals that lived 40 million years ago when this region was underwater. It's one of the most important paleontological sites in the world and one of Egypt's most genuinely awe-inspiring hidden wonders.
Yes — Egypt's only natural waterfall is at Wadi El Rayan in Fayoum. Water cascades between two connected desert lakes creating a natural waterfall surrounded by sand dunes. It's a truly unexpected and stunning sight in the middle of the desert that surprises every visitor who sees it for the first time.
The Magic Lake (Sitrawy Lake) is a small desert lake that changes color dramatically throughout the day — shifting between turquoise, green, blue, and pink depending on the light, time of day, and season. It's one of the most photographed hidden gems in Egypt and a recent social media favorite. The surrounding sand dunes add to its surreal, otherworldly beauty.
Fayoum is only 100 km southwest of Cairo — about 1.5 hours by car. A day trip is possible and covers the waterfalls and Magic Lake. However, to fully experience Wadi El Hitan, Lake Qarun birdwatching, and the desert dunes, we recommend an overnight stay. We offer both day trips and overnight Fayoum packages.
Yes! Fayoum sits perfectly on the route between Cairo and Bahariya Oasis — making it an ideal first stop before heading deeper into the Western Desert. We offer combined itineraries covering Wadi El Hitan, Wadi El Rayan, Magic Lake, and then overnight camping in the White Desert — all in one seamless 3-day trip.
Djara Cave (also called Gara Cave) is one of Egypt's most spectacular hidden gems — a prehistoric cave 30m wide and 8m high, filled with ancient Neolithic rock engravings and stunning natural stalactite formations. It was rediscovered in 1989 and is located 180 km from Bahariya. Absolutely worth the detour.
Yes — a licensed desert guide is essential for Djara Cave. It lies off the main road through the Western Desert and requires a 4x4 vehicle. The cave is typically included in our extended White Desert tours (3+ days). Our Bedouin guides bring candles to light the cave for the most atmospheric photos.
The cave contains animal engravings from the Neolithic Period — estimated to be over 10,000 years old. These include carvings of giraffes, cattle, and other animals, providing evidence that the Sahara was once a green, fertile landscape. It's a fascinating window into prehistoric Egypt.
Yes — every trip with Elzaghandi Travel is 100% custom-built. You choose your destinations, travel dates, group size, pace, and activities. We don't sell fixed packages — we design your journey from scratch around your interests and budget.
Essentials: sunscreen (SPF 50+), sunglasses, a hat or keffiyeh, comfortable walking shoes, a warm layer for cold desert nights, a headlamp or flashlight, a reusable water bottle, and a camera. We provide sleeping bags, tents, and all cooking equipment for camping trips.
We specialize in private and small group tours for a more personal, immersive experience. Whether you're traveling solo, as a couple, with family, or a group of friends — we tailor the experience to your group and ensure you have your guide's full attention throughout the trip.
Yes — all meals are included in our overnight tours. You'll enjoy traditional Egyptian and Bedouin cuisine: fresh salads, grilled meats, warm bread baked on the fire, and sweet tea under the stars. Vegetarian options are available — just let us know when booking.
Tour prices vary depending on group size, duration, and destinations. Private tours are priced per trip not per person — meaning the more people in your group, the lower the cost per person. Contact us on WhatsApp with your travel dates and group size and we'll send a custom quote within a few hours.
We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip cancellation. While our tours are safe and well-organized, the desert is remote and the nearest major hospital is in Bahariya or Cairo. A basic travel insurance policy gives you peace of mind and is usually very affordable.
Our guides speak Arabic and English fluently. For French, Italian, Spanish, or German-speaking travelers, we can arrange specialist guides with advance notice. Eyad himself communicates directly with all guests — so if you have any language needs, just mention it when booking.
Absolutely — we regularly host solo travelers. There is no minimum group size. Solo trips are fully private with a dedicated guide and vehicle just for you. Many of our best reviews come from solo travelers who say the private one-on-one experience with a local Bedouin guide made the trip truly unforgettable.
We recommend booking at least 1–2 weeks in advance, especially during peak season (October–April) when spots fill quickly. For large groups or special dates like New Year's Eve in the desert, book 4–6 weeks ahead. That said, we often accommodate last-minute bookings — reach out and we'll do our best to make it happen.
Simply reach out via WhatsApp (+20 155 069 2958) or through our contact form. Tell us your dates, how many people are joining, your preferred destinations, and any special interests. We'll get back to you within a few hours with a custom itinerary proposal — completely free, no commitment required.
